The voice of Kurdistan

Directors : Jacqueline Bottagisio & Georges Drion
Year : 1979
Length : 66 min
In French, Germain and English version

Apart from the historical aspect of Kurdistan and its division between four Middle-Eastern countries , the film portrays the Kurdish national movement in Iraq from 1961 until 1975, with a description of different social and political aspects : interview with a doctor, the situation of the Kurdish women and staying with the Peshmergas (freedom-fighters).

The film introduces an analysis of the Barzani leadership, which developped secret relations with the Shah of Iran and the United States. This led to the eventual collapse of the movement in 1975. The Iraqi Government, with Saddam Hussein as Prime Minister, then carried out the mass deportation of Kurdish villagers to the south of Iraq.

These led to the resurgence in 1977 of a new liberation struggle, led by the KDP and the PUK who both today administer the liberated Kurdistan of Iraq.

A restored copy of The Voice of Kurdistan will be screened at the Festival of Minorities in Douarnenez, France, in August 2003.
